Abstract

A couple of weeks ago the carried a study that suggested that there was no change in the mortality from breast cancer in European countries who offered regular screening mammography and those who didn't offer the same service. At the same time, I saw an article in by a British cancer surgeon saying that, in his opinion, screening mammography was not cost-effective and threw up a number of cases of ductal carcinoma in situ - many of which will not progress and do not need treatment. However, when this condition is found on mammography, women will be treated -and treatment for cancer is not without side-effects.
