Abstract

Malnutrition is a major public-health problem throughout the developing world and is an underlying factor in over 50% of the 10-11 million children under 5 years of age who die each year of preventable causes. In Africa, the prevalence of both stunting and underweight among preschool children in all regions except Northern Africa has not changed appreciably or has even increased since 1980. Because the population has increased, the absolute number of stunted and underweight children in the continent as a whole has increased by 50 and 75%, respectively.
