oa South African Journal of Sports Medicine - Noakes notes: Do academics give sporting prowess the credence it deserves

Abstract

There will always be those who think that the University's sole responsibility is to educate the mind, and that the body and physical recreation are below the dignity of a truly academic institution. I would argue that the University which fails to promote the practice of sport, and which fails to foster its athletes will be mediocre. Because it is the athletes who daily provide the living example of those enduring values to which each of us who make up the University, must aspire. For the athlete, like the academic, is nothing if he does not practice personal discipline and self-control.
