In South Africa the two sports responsible for virtually all serious injuries to the cervical spine are rugby and diving. For some years I have been analysing the clinical and radiological features of patients who have sustained cervical spinal injuries while participating in these two activities. I am surprised by the interest, publicity and controversy surrounding rugby injuries and the almost total lack of concern about the more common and equally tragic cases of traumatic spinal cord injury and paralysis due to diving accidents.
