Over the past few years, there has been an increasing incidence of distress in runners participating in long distance races (marathon distance and further). It has been very difficult to assess these reports accurately as they have been conveyed by word of mouth or by brief, sometimes sensational newspaper reports. These instances have been descriptionbed as ""collapse"", ""heat stroke"", ""exhaustion"", even ""heart attack"".
