oa South African Journal of Sports Medicine - Trauma in sport: Causes and treatment of cycling injuries

Abstract

Competitive cycling, although relatively free from overuse injuries so commonly seen in runners, is characterized by a series of relatively few sport-specific injuries that ranges from minor abrasions to even fatal accidents. The notion that prevention is better than cure applies equally to cycling as to any other sport. In this article the most common cycling injuries will be outlined together with guidelines towards the treatment and prevention of these injuries.
