Androgens are a class of steroid hormones which are secreted mainly by the testes, but also by the adrenal gland and ovaries. Testosterone is the main androgen secreted by the testes. Testosterone regulates differentiation and secretory function of the male sex organs and stimulates protein synthesis in muscle, bone and kidneys. Testosterone was isolated in 1935 and by 1937 pharmaceutical companies were already performing clinical trials with testosterone to determine its potential muscle building properties and uses in medicine.
