The stress placed by gymnasties on the musculoskeletal system is well known, and disorders about the upper extremity - especially of the shoulder - and of the lower extremity - particularly the knee - certainly occur with great frequency. Another area of special concern in the young gymnast, however, is injury to the back and spine in the course of training and competing in this sport.
