Exactly how and why the immune system is challenged by exercise has been the subject of a concerted research effort over the last decade. What has emerged is a highly inconsistent puzzle, because of the extreme complexity of the immune system and the barely quantifiable factors that influence it.
Long distance running and jogging have become increasingly popular in the last few years. With this increase in the number of runners on our roads, there has been a proportionate increase in the number of injuries.
This study involved the recording of beginner average and superior marathoner thought verbalizations during training sessions of diverse intensities, the development of a functional classification system of the runners' thoughts within the broad association / dissociation framework, and the content analysis o f the recorded thought texts.
The sportsman is inclined to believe that skin infections are minor health problems, and frequently fails to realise that even a minor skin infection, either bacterial or fungal, may make him more susceptible to an overwhelming secondary infection, which can be disabling. Eleven soccer players with partial tears of the distal quadriceps mechanism, who have been followed up for at least six months, are presented. The physical signs of the condition are descriptionbed and recommendations for early treatment made.
For as long as I can remember, sport has been an important component of my life. One of my earliest sporting recollections as an eight or nine year old, was sharing the national humiliation of devastating defeat at the hands of the touring Australian cricketers.
Despite equivocal findings in early laboratory and longitudinal studies investigating the relationship between exercise and infection risk, recent carefully controlled work appears to point towards a paradoxical response of the host defence and immune systems to endurance exercise; whereas long-term regular training is thought to stimulate these systems, acute exposure to exhaustive endurance exercise has been associated wiitli transient suppression thereof.
Too many the term aerobics conjures up an image of a Jane Fonda-like figure dressed in leopard leotard with matching leg warmers and lipstick. Although such individuals certainly are found in aerobic dance classes around the country, the average exerciser is far removed physically from this lithe, fit stereotype.
A wide variety of hand injuries occur in practically all sports. Many injuries are relatively minor and do not need major treatment but many serious injuries heal with severe restriction of function due to an inaccurate diagnosis and improper care. This may lead to a permanent restriction in sport participation.
Much has been written and said recently about the problems of rugby injuries. The extent of the problem is revealed by a comparison with injuries incurred during soccer matches which are shown to be less serious. A review of the literature also demonstrates differing sites of injury.
