I have reported on 50 patients admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at Conradie Hospital in Cape Town from 1964 to 1980, with paralysis due to rugby injuries to the cervical spinal cord. Since the first paper, published in 1976 1 there has been considerable discussion as regards reducing the incidence of these serious injuries and various changes to the rules have been introduced. In an attempt to ascertain whether following on these rule changes, there has been any decrease in the incidence of, or change in the mechanism of, these injuries, an analysis of the case histories and the radiographs of all rugby players admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Centre during the 7 year period 1981 to 1987 has been made.
