oa South African Journal of Sports Medicine - Psychological factors and sports injuries

Abstract

During the past two decades there has been a growing awareness of the association between psychological factors and sports performance. In particular the effectiveness of various psychological techniques and procedures in improving performance was extensively researched. However, a review of the literature revealed that very little systematic research has been done on the possible relationship between psychological factors and sports injuries. The genesis of injury is considered a complex, multifactorial process. The only psychological variable studied in this regard is stress.
