To investigate the illness and infection rate following the 1996 Dusi Canoe Marathon, held under flood conditions, and to investigate the relationship between illness and water contact, canoeing experience and water pollution. Retrospective study by post-race questionnaire mailed to all participants asking for information on illness and infection during and after the race, water contact, canoeing experience and previous race-associated illness. Data relating to river pollution were supplied by Umgeni Water.
