The electromagnetic radiation which reaches the earth from the sun extends from 290 to 4,000 nm, from the ultrashort invisible radiation through the visible spectrum to the infra-red spectrum. Sunburn is the unpleasant result of exposure to sunlight of 290 to 320 nm in the ultraviolet spectrum and varies from mild erythema to a fiery redness with oedema and blistering.
