oa South African Medical Journal - A new concept of the causation of neoplasms*

*Received for publication November 25, 1938. The theory has been propounded on purely logical grounds that cancer is more likely to be caused by some permanent chemical alteration in the metabolic mechanism of the cell than by an omnipresent virus. Suggestive evidence is presented to show that this alteration probably affects a central respiratory mechanism of the cell, and the Warburg-keilin or oxidase-cytochrome system is suggested as the particular system affected in malignancy. A new aspect of the organismal theory of the causation of cancer is presented, with particular reference to certain features of typhoid fever.
