oa South African Medical Journal - Malaria contracted on the Witwatersrand

The occurence of several cases of malaria, undoubtedly contracted on the Witwatersrand, has naturally aroused the suspicion that the breeding of malarial vectors may be taking place here. The factors governing the distribution of the two known important vectors of malaria, namely A. gambiae and A. funestus, are summarized, and it is shown that when gambiae breeding is very widespread overflow may even occur into the Witwatersrand area which is normally free of this species.
