Though skeletal traction is probably the most popular method of treating fractures of the shaft of the femur, it has certain disadvantages in the absence of constant skilled supervision. In such cases, immediate traction, followed by the application of plaster-of-Paris, provide an alternative form of treatment. It is suggested that this method might be employed for fractures admitted to field ambulances.
