oa South African Medical Journal - Uncertainties about the identity of adult schistosomes

Abstract

Variation in the number of testes in adult male schistosomes shows the difficulty in distinguishing the closely-allied species whose identity is more readily determined by consideration of the shape of ova escaping from the adult female worms. Adult male schistosome in uncommon situation such as the eyelid suggest the possible presence in South Africa of the schistosome which normally attacks the nasal veins of Indian stock, but confirmatory experiments are needed hefore their identity. can be established, as others are needed to confirm the accusation that only occasional hosts are to be regarded a important carrier of parasitic infection.
