Abstract

* Post-Graduate meeting in the Surgery Department, Medical School, Johannesburg. The pathology of burns is considered in five stages, each separate from the others. The cause of the third stage appears to be a circulating toxin, identity unknown. Blood histamine studies are suggestive, but definitely of what is as yet unknown. The whole problem of burn toxaemia needs further elucidation. Therapy towards liver protection may somewhat reduce mortality. The treatment of burns cannot be standardized, because it depends on many factors :- age of the burn; situation; depth of the burn.
