Forty-three non-abdominal cases were anaesthetised with ether without premeditation by atropine or hyoscine. This was a circumstance of necessity, not choice. Excessive secretion was found only in the pharynx. There was no ease of post-operative cough or sore throat. The implications with regard to post-operative pulmonary complications are noted.
