oa South African Medical Journal - Chronic essential pentosuria, with report of a case

Abstract

A case of chronic essential pentosuria, the first to our knowledge to be descriptionbed in South Africa, is reported. Chronic essential pentosuria is a rare abnormality in which the pentose, I-xyloketose or xylulose is excreted in the urine. It has a strong hereditary tendency, and is included among the inborn errors of metabolism"". It has no pathological significance, and the present case has maintained good health with no detectable abnormality for thirty-two years after the pentosuria was first discovered. It requires to be differentiated from ""diabetes mellitus"" renal glycosuria and other rare benign melliturias. The identification of the pentose is descriptionbed, and it is shown that the diagnosis of chronic essential pentosuria can be made by the general practitioner with no more laboratorv equipmentthan some Benedict's reagent and a test-tube.
