oa South African Medical Journal - Cooley's (Mediterranean) anaemia* in a South African-born European adolescent

Abstract

*The disease has also been called ""thalassemia"" ""erytbroblastic anaemia of Cooley"", ""target-cell anaemia"" and ""familial Mediterranean target-oval-cell syndrome"". A case of Cooley's anaemia (Mediterranean) is descriptionbed in a South African youth with no known relation to Mediterranean races (except for a French great-grandmother). The condition is characterised by a mild anaemia with hypochromia, aniso- and poikilocytosis of the R.B.C.s, increased blood destruction and increased blood regeneration. The resistance of the R.B.C.s to haemolysis in hypotonic saline is markedly increased.
