oa South African Medical Journal - South Africa's food requirements

A paper read at a conference on South African problems held in Johannesburg in July, 1946, and organised by the Association of Scientific Workers and the Association for the Advancement of Science. An estimate has been made of the food requirements of 10,000,000 persons, making use of the types of foods which are commonly eaten and produced in South Africa. Two different dietary patterns are descriptionbed: one of severe austerity, leaving little or no margin of safety; the second of less austerity, with a greater margin of safety.
