oa South African Medical Journal - The effect of recent changes of food habits on bowel motility

Abstract

The recent changes in food habits in which the branny portion of the wheat berry has been almost entirely eliminated from the modern diet, has had two important effects. Firstly, th absence of the bulk-forming cereal fibre has occasioned a great reduction in the bowel content - a reduction that has not been compensated for by the increased consumption of fruit and vegetables. Secondly, it has effected a great reduction in the intake of the B complex vitamins. The recent rise in the incidence of gastro-intestinal disorders is believed to be associated with this dietetic change.
