oa South African Medical Journal - The action of vaccines

Abstract

The present-day attitude in regard to the action of vaccines is that an excess of antibodies is produced in the blood as result of vaccine injection, which antibodies actually destroy the bacteria, chiefly by dissolving them either in the tissue fluids, or, after ingestion, into leucocytes. This concept does not explain the successful results of minute doses of vaccine in acute infections.
