Abstract

If preventive ideas are to be incorporated in the practice of clinical medicine and if clinical medicine and public health are to have a common ground, then a new scientific and philosophic approach to aetiology in medicine must be achieved. An attempt is made in this paper to provide such a new outlook. It postulates nothing new but it brings into new and essential co-ordination aspects of aetiology, some of which are neglected in the daily outlook of the clinician and some of which are neglected in the daily outlook of the public health specialist.
