oa South African Medical Journal - Brucella agglutinins : their occurrence in Witwatersrand milk supplies and in the serum of normal persons

Abstract

A total of 212 composite samples of milk distributed for consumption on the Witwatersrand were submitted to whey agglutination tests. Brucella agglutinins were present in 70 per cent. Of 92 samples of milk subjected to a biological test for Brucella organisms, three yielded positive results. Agglutinins were present in the serum to a titre of I: 40 in three of 200 normal blood donors in one to a titre of I: 20 and in four to a titre of I : 10. It is suggested that a diagnostic titre of I : 100 be used on the Witwatersrand as indicative of active infection.
