oa South African Medical Journal - Schistosomiasis of the female genital tract

Abstract

Thirty consecutive autopsies were done on African adult females found to be suffering from schistosomiasis. All had a S. haematobium infestation but, in addition, 12 showed infection by S. mansoni. In each case the vagina, cervix. uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries were examined separately for ova by the digestion method. The vagina had ova in 97% of the cases. the cervix in 93%, the uterus in 83%. the ovaries in 80% and the Fallopian tubes in 53%. In almost every instance the ova were those of S. haematobium. S. mansoni, however, rarely infected the female genitalia. The significance of these findings is discussed.
