oa South African Medical Journal - Glomus tumours : their diagnosis and pathology

The histology and the physiology of the normal cutaneous (neuro-myo-arterial) glomus is descriptionbed. The clinical picture of a typical case of glomus tumour is presented with special reference to the differential diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis was confirmed first by laboratory investigations and later by histological examination of the excised specimen. Although the tumour proved to be extremely cellular, the vasomotor disturbances affecting the whole extremity were marked and did not completely disappear following excision of the tumour. The histological picture of the tumour, consisting of typical epithelioid cells, is illustrated. The benign nature of the tumour, which never recurs following local excision, is stressed.
