oa South African Medical Journal - Abscess of the spleen : a review and a case presenting as an intestinal obstruction

Abstract

A review of existing and obtainable literature on abscess of the spleen has been presented and in addition, a report on the first case of a splenic abscess presenting clinically as an intestinal obstruction has been made. Splenic abscess was not suspected, but the case recovered completely after splenotomy and extensive chemotherapy. It is also suggested that the term 'Primary Splenic Abscess' be used only with hesitation after a thorough investigation for a primary causal condition, and that the term 'sequestrating abscess' is undesirable on pathological grounds. Despite the fact that all the available literature suggests splenotomy, mention is here made that massive antibiotic therapy may be sufficient, as in lung abscess.
