oa South African Medical Journal - Control of surgical bleeding by the production of hypotensive states : a preliminary report

Abstract

It is demonstrated that the blood pressure level is not necessarily an index of adequate circulation. Adequate circulation can apparently still be present in the presence of profound hypotensive states. The clinical application of hypotensive states to reduce operative bleeding is discussed. The use of Hexathide and regional analgesia in the production of hypotension is descriptionbed and the relative merits of each for various operations discussed. The necessity for further study of this technique is emphasized.
