oa South African Medical Journal - Prophylactic daily oral sulphadiazine therapy : its effect on circulating leucocytes

Abstract

In therapeutic doses, sulphanilimide upsets the polymorph : lymphocyte ratio, as well as the reciprocal balance between these cells. This imbalance is indicative of leucocyte destructionas shown also by leucopenia and the associated neutropenia. In contrast to the above:- with prophylactic Sulphadiazine therapy in daily doses of 0.25-0.5 gm., we produce: 1. A reversal of the polymorph : lymphocyte ratio, with 2. No abnormal decrease in the total white cell count; together with 3. A relative lymphocytosis. Furthermore, this therapy is safe, as there is no apparent destruction of white cells.
