oa South African Medical Journal - The effect of thyroid extract in hypertension

Abstract

Twenty-two cases of hypertension were treated with thyroid extract following a control period of placebo administration. Two out of 18 patients had a decrease in diastolic pressure of more than 15 mm. Hg on no treatment or on placebo therapy, while in 2 out of 25 trials there was a decrease in diastolic pressure of more than 15 mm. Hg on thyroid therapy. It does not appear that thyroid extract in the dose used has any dramatic effect beneficial or otherwise on the level of blood pressure or on the symptoms of essential hypertension.
