Abstract

The question arises whether the present rate of population increase is something new or unexpected which could not have been foreseen by demographers. We may find the answer by observing, firstly, that the present rate of increase is undoubtedly due in the main to the falling death rate particularly so in countries where the death rates were relatively high.
