Thirty-one competitors in a particularly strenuous 54mile marathon race had their renal function assessed before and after the event. Seventy per cent of them had red cells in their urine and 60% showed proteinuria after the event, but in most cases the urine returned to normal apart from a trace of protein after 24 hours.
