On the basis of a sample of 30 inpatients from the surgical ward of the Johannesburg General Hospital, suffering from duodenal ulceration, matched against 30 controls comprising surgical conditions of comparable severity, augmented by the transcultural comparison of 50 medical outpatient duodenal ulcer cases from Israel, recent views of psychosomatic illness as a reaction to stress, independent of static personality traits or specific types of emotional conflict, are confirmed.
