During the period 1967 - 1977 there have been five major developments in obstetric practice in the units of the University of Cape Town - better management of preterm labour, regionalization of perinatal care, the advent of the midwife obstetric units (MOUs), the development of neonatal intensive care units, and a remarkable expansion of family planning services.
