Abstract

Phalacrocorax capensis a successful primary and secondary predator of marine life on South Africa's west coast, has astable population of one million, due to prey availability in the nutrient-rich Benguela current. Man-made guano platfoms provide safe breeding sites, yielding c. 1,694 metric tons guano annually. Breeding cycle is predictable, being synchronised by several enviromentaI cues.
