The objectives of this study were to assess the psychometric properties of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for academic staff in South African higher education institutions, and to investigate differences between the work engagement of the different demographic groups. A cross-sectional survey design was used, with stratified random samples (n = 595) taken of academics in six South African higher education institutions. The UWES and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Structural Equation Modelling confirmed a three-factor model of work engagement, consisting of three dimensions, namely and The three scales of the UWES showed acceptable internal consistency. Statistically significant differences were found between the work engagement of academics with different job levels and qualification
