Apart from being classified as a gram negative, microaerophilic helix shaped bacterium responsible for peptic ulcer disease and gastritis; it is also classified as a class 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the WHO. Responsible for gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma. To date, the litany of other conditions associated with Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) continues to grow. Testing is also now advised for patients with immune thrombocytopenia purpura, unexplained vitamin B12 or iron deficiency anemia. Despite the indications for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection widening, definitive effective treatment remains elusive.
