Abstract

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a common disorder associated with significant impairment in quality of life. The Montreal definition states that it is a condition which develops when reflux of stomach contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications. It is estimated that 25-40% of healthy Americans experience the symptoms of GORD at least once a month and that 7-10% of Americans get daily symptoms. Worldwide, the prevalence of GORD is increasing and this is thought to be associated with increasing obesity.
