Abstract

We carry about a 100 trillion organisms in our gut. They weigh about 2 kg (the same weight as our brains) and they have the metabolic capacity of a human liver. Every other orifice such as our airways are also colonised by them and 5 - 8% of our DNA is endogenous retroviruses that may play a role in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia.
