Abstract

hepatitis B virus infection remains a global problem of staggering proportions. It is estimated that 350 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and sub-Saharan Africa remains a high prevalence region. Most carriers will not develop significant hepatic disease but 15 - 40 % will develop serious sequelae during their lifetime.
