Finally after 5 weeks of running around, sending emails, and making phone calls we were able to start interviewing our first patients for the study. When I wasn't busy with research tasks I got a chance to observe some of the physicians in the clinic at work. From seeing out-patients with the doctors, to accompanying them on their ward rounds, to watching by their side as they performed colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, to sitting in on radiology and histology meetings in which the doctors discussed confusing cases with each other and with specialists. I had a great opportunity to observe the way health care is practiced in this country. I even was able to attend a few days of the 2008 SAGES conference in Cape Town.
