Abstract

Barrett's oesophagus (BE) is characterized by the replacement of normal stratified squamous epithelium of the distal oesophagus by columnar epithelium with specialized intestinal metaplasia (IM). Intestinal metaplasia in turn is characterized by the presence of goblet cells on histology. It is generally accepted that BE is the only known premalignant condition that precedes the development of oesphageal adenocarcinoma (OAC).There is a strong association with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity.
