n African Journal of Psychiatry - Consequences of untreated severe psychiatric disorders in northern Nigeria : scientific letter

Psychiatric disorders are accorded low priority in Sub-Saharan Africa despite being a great cause of disability in this region of the world. Mental health services are often not accessible to the greater proportion of the population in this region of the world. Reasons for low attention to mental health services are mainly due to the high premium placed on infectious disease and maternal and child health as evidenced by high budgetary allocations to these sectors in comparison to mental health services.
