October 2005 5 Uterine leiomyomas Introduction Uterine leiomyomas, also known as myomas or fibroids, are by far the most common gynaecological tumours. They originate from smooth muscle and usually arise from the uterine myometrium and less commonly from the cervix. While these tumours are commonly known as fibroids, this term is inaccurate by histological criteria.
