The search was therefore on for a COX-2 selective drug and the pot of gold that would accompany it. Celecoxib, a weakly COX-2 selective agent, was released in 1998 following trials lasting 3 - 6 months. Rofecoxib ("Vioxx"), the first highly COX-2 selective agent, was approved for release on 21 May 1999. Its release was based on studies of 6 months' duration showing anti-inflammatory and analgesic efficacy and improved GIT safety compared with NSNSAIDs. ..
