Principles of anaesthetic care 1.1 Anaesthesia should be administered only by medical practitioners with appropriate training in anaesthesia (see Section II) 1.2 The sine qua non of the safe conduct of anaesthesia is the physical presence of such a practitioner constantly in attendance during anaesthesia. Furthermore, the anaesthesiologist should be readily available during the period of recovery from anaesthesia until such time as the patient is deemed fit for transfer from the recovery area.
