MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY SA 2 JUNE 2006 VOL. 20 NO. 1 Editorial Oxidative stress has been implicated in at least fifty disease conditions amongst which degenerative diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease are the most common. It is generally agreed that oxidative stress is the consequence of the inability of the biological defense systems to maintain free radical levels in the tissues within normal physiological limits. Under normal physiological conditions equilibrium is maintained between the production and removal of free radicals, which under these conditions fulfill important physiological functions example maintenance of endothelial function, blood pressure, immune function and inflammation. ..
