This leads to a principle of parity in health care delivery; recognising and accepting that mental illness is the same as physical illness in terms of the need to assess professionally (and also that the two are related); making a diagnosis based on facts and guided by existing diagnostic criteria; prescribing medications that will reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with the illness; and making sure that relevant information is given to the patients and the caregivers about the illness.
